Souq Al Shweihiyeen is located in the Art Area. It has
a large open space known as 'Arsah Alsakham' in the center,
which was one time the meeting place where the Bedouins
used to gather with their goods like coal, wood, grass (thumam),
etc. for sale. At the corner is the old fish market and
vegetable market. The green vegetables were earlier brought
in from Al-fili agricultural area in Sharjah. The greengrocers
were mostly women known as 'Mazmiyat', related to Mazam
in Iran.
The several small trading ships seen on the sea shore were
used to come from abroad. East to the souk is the drydock
(Jadaf) and also there were the small fishing boats known
as 'hawari' and 'shawaheef'. In the past most of these small
shops were owned by Shaikhs among whom was Sheikh Khalid
bin Khalid Al Qasimi and a number of prominent citizens
such as Majidbim Abdalla Al Shamsi, Hamad bin Abdalla Al
Shamsi and Hamad Al Mashguni.
Most of these shops used to sell food stuff, wholesale
& retail and the merchants mostly belong to Zaraina
tribe, who are well known in Iran. The other famous shops
were owned by the tailors Ameen Ahmed Ameen and Qailan.
There is another shop owned by Taymor, who used to sell
the local sweet. The Sarfar Coffee shop and bakery wer owned
by Abdul Aziz Kukhardi.
There were six gates from all sides to enter this souk.
